McDowell's History

John E. McDowell, Sr. has been in the funeral business since the age of 16. After graduating high school, he served in the United States Army, also a Vietnam War hero earning a Bronze Star with three Clusters and making Staff Sergeant in only two years.

John graduated from Gupton-Jones Mortuary College. John was Operating the family business in East Point and Griffin, Georgia. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Sallie L. McDowell in 1987.

In 1992 McDowell's Funeral Home, Inc. was founded by John and Sallie McDowell in Griffin, Georgia. Together they have three children. Daughters Carla and Felicia are morticians. Felicia better known as "Lisa" is also a nurse practitioner at Emory University Hospital Midtown and Carla is with the University System of Georgia. Their son, John Jr. is currently attending Gupton-Jones Mortuary College as of October, 2009. Sallie L. McDowell graduated with a degree in business management from Atlanta Technical School and also attended Dekalb College in business administration. She is the chief business manager of the business.

John and Sallie are members of New Generation Christian Fellowship where John E. McDowell, Sr. serves as an Ordained Deacon and Sallie L. McDowell serves on the Trustee Board, Finance Committee and Adult Choir. Apostle Mamie J. Smith is pastor and the McDowell’s Funeral Home Chaplain.
